Hoodia

Is a matter derived from natural world and it is known to act as a hunger suppressant. Because of these possessions of Hoodia, it is used in weight loss pills to give a emotion of fullness.

Origin:

Hoodia belong to the family unit Apocynaceae. Hoodia gordonii is a resident plant of South Africa. It is a little juicy plant with spike on it. So it resembles a cactus and is called ‘cacti form’, but it is not connected to cactus family. Its growth is very sluggish and it takes approximately four to five years to mature. It is rather bitter taste plant. The flowers of Hoodia plant give a foul stench.

Hoodia gordonii was forever used by the native people for harms like dyspepsia etc. Since centuries the San tribesmen of South Africa ate the red meat of this plant to decrease hunger. They used this when they were away from home for long period of time, especially on the hunting trips. The home names for this plant are ‘Bushman’s hat’ or ‘Queen of Namib’.

Now Hoodia gordonii plant is in danger of being died out. It grows only in the South African Kalahari wilderness, so very limiter supply is obtainable. But now it is being over-harvested for the profitable purposes of developed Hoodia weight loss pills.

Mode of action and studies:

By scientific research, the appetite-suppressing part of Hoodia gordonii plant was alienated and it is known as P57. This part P57 works on the satiety center of the brain. It produces a matter closer to glucose. But this matter has much stronger effect than glucose, so it gives feeling of fullness because hypothalamus receive fullness signal.

Many studies were conduct to test the result of Hoodia gordonii and its side effects, if any. The study was approved out on two different groups. The group, which was given Hoodia weight loss pills, consumed 1000 calories less every day than the control group, which was not given any Hoodia addition.

The findings were interesting but it is not yet FDA standard weight loss drug, because the effectiveness and security of this addition in humans is not yet recognized. Clinical trials to verify its safe and effectual usage are required.

The only approved producer of Hoodia weight loss supplement, Phytopharm, has proclaimed the need of a few more years to set up Hoodia as weight loss product. So the Hoodia weight loss pills market by multiple companies needs to be examining for it’s contented of active Hoodia element.

Side effects:

It is maintain that the Hoodia diet pills are safer than other OTC diet supplements. But still there is no established proof about it and its side effects are not so far fully known. Some scientists have indicated undesired belongings on the liver. These side effects are due to other mechanism present in Hoodia along with the P57 element. It is hard to divide these unwanted compounds from P57. So it is not yet declared totally safe.

Also there is no available scientific proof that Hoodia works as appetite suppressant in human beings.

he Hoodia gordonii class is rare and listed under CITES – meeting on International Trade in scarce Species of wild flora and fauna. It requires CITES documentation to export Hoodia from Africa. So the claims complete by various Hoodia weight loss pills producer about the genuineness of its hoodia content could be doubtful. Also a report of self-governing testing lab citing scientific analysis of the product and confirm attendance of authentic Hoodia gordonii in the product should be checkered before going for such foodstuffs. It was often found that almost half of the foodstuffs claiming to contain the hunger suppressant Hoodia did not have any draw of it.

The pharmaceutical huge Pfizer which past collaborated with Phytopharm for the manufacture of Hoodia weight loss pills, pulled back for the reason that it looked quite difficult to use the active ingredient of Hoodia in a pill. And so, the existing Hoodia goods should be checkered for genuineness before using it.
